Mason jars. Versatile and inexpensive, I have been repurposing them for years. I love the recent explosion of mason jar accessories, crafts, and up cycling ideas. However, my favorite use is as a ready made window sill herb garden. Especially during the winter months when fresh herbs are scarce.
How:
Start with pint-sized jar
Fill bottom with 2 inches of rinsed aquarium gravel for drainage
Add potting soil
Mix in a bit of compost ,if possible, or good quality fertilizer
Plant 5-6 seeds in a circle, pressing into the soil about 1/2 inch
Water and place in a sunny window sill
Turn the jars daily and water every two days
Keep soil moist but not soggy
Depending upon the type of herbs, they should sprout within a few days
Once sprouted, keep the three best plants, pull out the others
